The Black Parade
A rock opera about a dying man being led into the afterlife by a marching band. It sold more than four million copies, gave the band their first UK number one single, and twenty years later it is still the reason they can fill baseball stadiums.
The concept
Who The Patient is
The album follows a character the band called The Patient. He is dying of cancer. The framing came from an idea Gerard Way had about death, that the moment you go, you are met by one strong memory from your life rather than by anything grand. For The Patient that memory is a parade his father took him to as a child, so death arrives dressed as a marching band and takes him with it.
From there the record moves through his death, what he finds on the other side, and what he makes of the life he just left. That structure is why the songs run the way they do, opening on a hospital bed and closing on someone shouting back at his own funeral.
How it was made
Recording ran from April to August 2006, split between El Dorado in Burbank and Capitol in Hollywood. Rob Cavallo produced it with the band. Cavallo had already worked on records for Green Day and the Goo Goo Dolls, and the scale he brought is audible in the piano and choral arrangements that a band coming off a Warped Tour record had not used before.
The Queen comparison followed the album everywhere and the band never really pushed back on it. Liza Minnelli sings on the track Mama, which tells you how far they were willing to take the theatre of it.
The release, and why the anniversary date is confusing
Europe got the album on 23 October 2006. The United States got it on 24 October 2006. That is why you will see both dates cited as the anniversary depending on where the source is writing from. It also explains why the tour's final show, at the Hollywood Bowl on 24 October 2026, lands exactly twenty years after the American release.

Blood is a hidden track on the standard edition. The Japanese release swapped it for Heaven Help Us. Four singles came off the album: Welcome to the Black Parade, Famous Last Words, I Don't Love You and Teenagers.
Twenty years later
Two tours, one record
The band has now built two separate touring cycles around this album. The first, called Long Live: The Black Parade, ran through 2025 and finished that September. It moved over 450,000 tickets across ten North American markets, which is an unusual figure for a rock band nineteen years past an album release.
Seventeen more dates were announced on 22 September 2025 for the anniversary year itself, and those became The Black Parade 2026. Combined with the South American and Southeast Asian legs already scheduled, that makes 2026 the largest touring year of the band's career.
Reissue history
A tenth anniversary edition arrived in 2016 as The Black Parade / Living With Ghosts, pairing the album with demo material. The vinyl has been repressed many times since, including a tour exclusive during the 2025 run.
